Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend — Happenings

December 2, 2016

You know it is officially the Holiday season in Old Town as the twinkle light are adorning tree-tops on King Street, Mayor Silberberg and Santa have lit the tree in Market Square, and everyone is getting out their plaid for Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend!

screen-shot-2016-12-01-at-4-22-43-pm

The Scottish Walk is Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia’s annual Christmas Time Parade. The first Saturday of every December our historic, colonial, brick lined, novel-esque town is transported to the majesty of the Christmas through the Scottish Walk. You see people you know. Everyone’s happy. Neighbors throw parties. Friends gather at local spots. Folks toast to the magic of the season. And then come sunset our charming port city plays host to the Parade of Lights where boats decorated for the holidays shimmying down the Potomac. It’s a pretty magical day in Old Town!

Hearing the bagpipes dancing through the air sets a magical mood — one can really the emotion of the holiday. And the weekend is packed with tons Christmassy things to do in Old Town!

In addition to the parades on Saturday December 3rd their is a designer homes tour, an open house at Carlyle House, a holiday market and more! Check out some info that Visit Alexandria provided on what’s all happening this weekend:

Don’t miss Old Town Alexandria’s most spectacular holiday weekend. In 1749, the City of Alexandria was officially established by three Scottish merchants and named after its original founder, John Alexander, also of Scottish descent. Today, the city continues celebrating its heritage with a weekend of festivities. The iconic Scottish Christmas Walk Parade takes place on Saturday, December 3, at 11 a.m., when dozens of Scottish clans dressed in colorful tartans will parade through the streets of Old Town, joined by pipe and drum bands from around the region, as well as terriers and hounds.

More weekend events include a Taste of Scotland (December 2), Heather and Greens sale (November 19 and December 2-3), the Campagna Center’s Holiday Designer Tour of Homes (December 3), and Deck the Halls with Santa (December 10). The Campagna Center partners with Mazda North America, the Scottish Government, Passport Auto, the St. Andrews Society, and the City of Alexandria to host the annual parade. Consistently ranked by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of the top 20 events in the South, this event has grown from a small informal parade to an entire weekend filled with events and festivities. #SCWW16

On the first Saturday of December, at sundown on the day of the annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade, Alexandria’s harbor lights up as dozens of illuminated boats cruise the Potomac River at the historic waterfront. The highly anticipated Alexandria Holiday Market is modeled in similar fashion to Europe’s festive Christmas markets, which are popular in countries across the pond like Germany and France. Traditionally, the markets would transform outdoor town centers where vendors would take up shop in small wooden stalls. Similarly, the Alexandria Holiday Market will encourage shoppers to “shop outside the box” and come outdoors to the festival to find unique art and craft items and enjoy sweets and mulled wine. To help get into the holiday spirit, shoppers will also be treated to live entertainment from local musicians. The Alexandria Holiday Market will cater to the whole family and feature a special children’s corner with special activities for kids, including  Santa.

Pip Pip Cheerio!

Did ya know “pip pip” mimics the double honk you’d here on a motorcar in the early 20th century? It's an upperclass British coloqualism for farewell.🎩 I learned that because we're Downton Abbey superfans! And Miles and I visited Highclere Castle — the real life Downton in Yorkshire.📺 It was one of the best days of my life! Full of intention, serenity, gratitude, luxury, playfulness, and beauty.🧚 Pure magic!🪄 Just like life is supposed to be.♥️

I love you! Pip pip. 😘 Gigi

Hello hello! Bonjour beauties! I thought the fir Hello hello! Bonjour beauties!

I thought the first week of Spring would be a nice time to put up a new little hello & welcome post about us . . .

I'm Jennifer and together with my husband, Miles, and our furry princess, Miabelle, we’re collectively known as Jet Set Jiles. Jennifer + Miles = Jiles — a nickname we got when we were dating that stuck.

We consciously create a life filled with beauty at home and on our travels.

We enjoy practicing the art of living well, and creating daily rituals to thrive & nourish the soul.

And while we’ve always traveled, entertained, explored, shopped and dined well, since Miles' retirement, we've incorporated “snowbirding" into our repertoire.

Also, we’re Downton Abby super fans. When Miles retired it was the first show we binged. And then we booked tickets to London to go see the place in person! Highclere Castle, where they filmed Downton, is just the perfect day trip!

We love sharing all of our discoveries, and invite you to come along for the ride.

📸One of the most memorable and best days of my life was when we visited Highclere Castle! I’ll post more on that soon! ♥️

📸We didn’t have Miabelle yet when we visited Highclere. We got her Christmas Eve 2020. Swipe to see her confused but pretty little face right when we brought her home.🐾

📸 And the last pic is us out for family walk in Old Town. The beautiful spot we call home.♥️

On our first Valentines Day as a couple, we decide On our first Valentines Day as a couple, we decided to keep it low key. After all, there can be lots of pressure around Valentine’s Day! And no new couple needs that!

A movie at my home was the plan. At my Torpedo Factory townhouse (we still had both our townhouses then). Cheese and charcuterie. A fire in the fireplace. Ya know.

I went to Harris Teeter to buy some pate, brie, and the likes.

As I was standing in line. I saw beautiful red roses in a basket in the line next to me. And I wondered if Miles was going to give me flowers? He told me early on that he really doesn’t give flowers. So I was prepared for that.

As I was having my thoughts. I looked up and there he was. My then boyfriend, Miles. And those red roses that I thought were so beautiful were for me! 🌹

I seem to remember too that he was bummed to get caught. But he did think it was rather convenient to send the flowers along with me in my car since I was going straight there with the other stuff. 😂

I’m so grateful for the flowers. And for the fact that I thought to take a pic. I love remembering this every year! 📸

Love you so much @milesdejiles thanks for all the flowers and love you’ve given me! 🥰

Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I use Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I used to dread that day before Miles.

I just want to remind everyone. I didn’t meet Miles until I was 34ish and Miles was 52ish.

If you have someone you really love to celebrate with: fabulous. If not: celebrate you! And your fur baby, if you have one!

Don’t give your power away to a day. Hold true to the fact that you are special, divine, and worthy of a magical miraculous love.

Wait for the one. I promise. It’s with it.

😘

One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, drive to Las Vegas. We were so ready to just get there. To the bungalow in Summerlin. To settle in. Not unpack and pack up the car again.

We were gonna push through. Almost there. One more ice tea from McDonalds. I thought.

I made the wrong turn to get the ice tea. And we ended up in Sedona.

It is a really beautiful spot. A picture perfect detour.

And the next day. Before leaving for our final stretch through the desert to Las Vegas, I got my ice tea at the only place where McDonalds Golden Arches are actually turquoise.
