Colonial Chex Mix — A Homemade Gift that’s Great with Cocktails

August 5, 2019

We visited our good friends, Sheila and Jack, in Colonial Beach this weekend. They had us and two other couples from the Boat Club down for the weekend. It’s kinda the culture of our quadruple date weekend that all the women bring a homemade food element. It’s nice because it’s not only a gift for the hosts but also something that we all can enjoy throughout the weekend. LizAnn always makes a make-ahead brunch casserole. Dee always brings a dip to bake. And I usually bring a snack.

This time we decided to make homemade Chex Party mix. Chex Mix is something you can technically buy prepackaged but it’s just not the same.

Our Colonial Chex Mix was a hit! Great for munching on with drinks.

Our recipe is based on the Pioneer Woman’s recipe. She used Tobasco. I used Tobasco. But don’t expect a kick. No one tasted any spicy spice. Which kinda’ makes the mix great to go with an array of different drinks over a beach weekend.

Bloody Mary. Strawberry Daiquiri. Prosecco. Bud Light. Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep.

We named this one Colonial Chex Mix because we took it to Colonial Beach. Plus it helps to differentiate it from our other recipe that uses Cayenne and does actually have a kick.

If we were on the Food Network right now I’d say “let me show ya how we made it” then they’d “flashback” to the creation of the recipe. Well, we’re on Old Town Post not Food Network but let me show you how we made it . . .

Here’s your ingredients . . .

We made ours in a recyclable giant pasta pan and I highly recommend it! Easy to stir. Easy to clean-up.

From your cupboards you’ll need:

  • 2 cup measuring cup — microwave safe
  • 1/2 teaspoon
  • 1/4 teaspoon
  • tablespoon
  • rubber spatula
  • giant pasta pan

Now add 3 cups Corn Chex.

Add 3 cups Rice Chex.

Add 2 cups Wheat Chex.

Add two cups pretzel sticks.

Add the whole 16 oz container of peanuts. Just dump ‘um right on in . . .

Last but not least, add the Bugles. 2 cups.

That’s the last of using our measuring cup for measuring out the mix pieces. Now we’ll make the sauce in it.

The sauce is pretty scary delicious. It’s got a lot of butter! Add a stick and a half right on in the measuring cup.

Now add, 3 1/2 teaspoons roasted garlic.

Next, add 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce.

And some Tobasco. We added 8 drops. (The Pioneer Woman recommends 6-12 dashes to taste.)

Add 1/4 teaspoon onion powder.

And finally, use your 1/4 teaspoon measure again to add 1 teaspoon of Lawry’s Seasoned Salt (that’s 4 — 1/4 teaspoons).

Micro until butter is melted. We did 30 second increments and it took a minute and a half.

Whisk. Whisk. Whisk.

Add half the sauce.

Toss with a rubber spatula (this helps to not break the cereal).

Add the rest of the sauce and toss.

Bake at 250 for 1 hour and 30 minutes stirring every 15 minutes.

When the mix is done and cools put it into air tight storage containers. We like to present it in a mason jar for a gift. But for the weekend with this many people we put the rest in gallon baggies.

Cheers!

Here’s an o’ so clever printable. . . .

Pip Pip Cheerio!

Did ya know “pip pip” mimics the double honk you’d here on a motorcar in the early 20th century? It's an upperclass British coloqualism for farewell.🎩 I learned that because we're Downton Abbey superfans! And Miles and I visited Highclere Castle — the real life Downton in Yorkshire.📺 It was one of the best days of my life! Full of intention, serenity, gratitude, luxury, playfulness, and beauty.🧚 Pure magic!🪄 Just like life is supposed to be.♥️

I love you! Pip pip. 😘 Gigi

Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I use Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I used to dread that day before Miles.

I just want to remind everyone. I didn’t meet Miles until I was 34ish and Miles was 52ish.

If you have someone you really love to celebrate with: fabulous. If not: celebrate you! And your fur baby, if you have one!

Don’t give your power away to a day. Hold true to the fact that you are special, divine, and worthy of a magical miraculous love.

Wait for the one. I promise. It’s with it.

One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, drive to Las Vegas. We were so ready to just get there. To the bungalow in Summerlin. To settle in. Not unpack and pack up the car again.

We were gonna push through. Almost there. One more ice tea from McDonalds. I thought.

I made the wrong turn to get the ice tea. And we ended up in Sedona.

It is a really beautiful spot. A picture perfect detour.

And the next day. Before leaving for our final stretch through the desert to Las Vegas, I got my ice tea at the only place where McDonalds Golden Arches are actually turquoise.

“What’s going on?” I can feel the question i “What’s going on?” I can feel the question in the field as I consciously dropped off social to be more present during our trip to visit Grandma in the American Heartland.

We’ve been staying with Grandma at her place. Taking her to her favorite spots. And watching lots of Hallmark movies (Miles brought his headphones so he could watch his own stuff on his iPhone. 😂).

Today was the first time we went to Terra Bloom. And we spent the afternoon. Doing a bit of gridwork. But this trip isn’t about gridwork. It’s about Grandma! 💕

That said. When we were at Terra Bloom. I got a clear message, sitting on the veranda, in the cold, sipping decaf, overlooking the Mighty Missippi, that were to come back for the month of March. So there’s that.

Some of you know this. Some of you are new. So here’s a bit about Terra Bloom. . . .

Terra Bloom is a house I bought and renovated 15ish years ago. It became a family home when I got called back to Virginia — which was essentially me getting called back to fulfill my divine union destiny with Miles, who was in Old Town waiting to meet me. lol.

Terra Bloom is built on what was once a Native American enslavement camp. I did not know that until a few months ago.

It used to be very overwhelming for me there. Now, I able to live in a state of serenity. But it can still be very intense at times, to say the least. But not today. Not this trip.

The house, Terra Bloom, the land, the history, and the wisdom is very significant in the tapestry of what we’re doing now as we bridge to the 5th dimension and beyond. And Indigenous roots are extremely potent and powerful in a past life that Miles and I shared where we were again in divine union and grid working.

It’s all beyond fascinating! And a little mind blowing.

More on all this later. But for now, back to Hallmark!

😘 Gigi (Miles & Mia)
