Christmastime Calendar in Washington DC’s Old Town Alx Neighborhood — The Scottish Walk & Other Holiday Happenings

November 15, 2022

Happy Christmas-time friends!

As y’all know our home base is Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia — once part of Washington DC we’re now a super cute small town just across the river. In our neighborhood the traditional backdrop of yesteryear is juxtaposed with a bustling waterfront, serene riverwalk, water taxis, private vessels, current boutiques, hip restaurants, and the fashions of today. All in a this once colonial turned revolutionary city.

While Alexandria is great any time of the year. When this sweet small town, founded by Scottish merchants in 1749, really comes alive, when it really shows it’s magic, is at Christmas! And Alexandria’s most iconic Holiday tradition — the Scottish Walk — takes place the first Saturday of December every year among the streets named after a monarchy we sought our freedom from over two centuries ago.

Kilts are donned on parade marchers and onlookers alike, while bagpipes dance through the sky, and pineapples – the traditional symbol of welcoming – are the centerpieces on our tables and part of the boxwood jewelry on our doors. It’s all the ingredients of this Christmas-time magic!

We were sent a catalogue of holiday happenings from Visit Alexandria that we wanted to share. I left in everything versus just pointing out what Miles, our little Sugar Plum, and I enjoy. I know some of you have human children and might want to have breakfast with Santa and stuff like that. lol.

Our kind of happenings on the list includes Scottish Walk stuff, Parade of Lights (though we watch this on Nautical Jiles or the Boat Club versus the parks), Mount Vernon, Carlyle & Lee Fendall (their boxwood thing sounds fun but I doubt I get Miles on board for it. lol).

Enjoy the Christmas Catalogue friends (also it doesn’t appear to be in a particular order so be sure to scan it all to find your holiday memory making activities!). And we hope to see you around Old Town this very merry season. Fa la la la la . . .

😘 Gigi, Miles & Princess Mia the Old Town Sugar Plum Fairy

p.s. Unless I’m guided otherwise, it looks like we’re not traveling, and staying home for the holiday season! Focusing the lightwork and gridwork in DC. So expect a couple posts coming soon on our must Holiday experiences in Washington! Also there are two spiritual offerings I’ve been guided to create for the Season. Exact details coming soon. But know Mother Mary, flowers, and Angels will all be there!

Pip Pip Cheerio!

Did ya know “pip pip” mimics the double honk you’d here on a motorcar in the early 20th century? It's an upperclass British coloqualism for farewell.🎩 I learned that because we're Downton Abbey superfans! And Miles and I visited Highclere Castle — the real life Downton in Yorkshire.📺 It was one of the best days of my life! Full of intention, serenity, gratitude, luxury, playfulness, and beauty.🧚 Pure magic!🪄 Just like life is supposed to be.♥️

I love you! Pip pip. 😘 Gigi

Hello hello! Bonjour beauties! I thought the fir Hello hello! Bonjour beauties!

I thought the first week of Spring would be a nice time to put up a new little hello & welcome post about us . . .

I'm Jennifer and together with my husband, Miles, and our furry princess, Miabelle, we’re collectively known as Jet Set Jiles. Jennifer + Miles = Jiles — a nickname we got when we were dating that stuck.

We consciously create a life filled with beauty at home and on our travels.

We enjoy practicing the art of living well, and creating daily rituals to thrive & nourish the soul.

And while we’ve always traveled, entertained, explored, shopped and dined well, since Miles' retirement, we've incorporated “snowbirding" into our repertoire.

Also, we’re Downton Abby super fans. When Miles retired it was the first show we binged. And then we booked tickets to London to go see the place in person! Highclere Castle, where they filmed Downton, is just the perfect day trip!

We love sharing all of our discoveries, and invite you to come along for the ride.

📸One of the most memorable and best days of my life was when we visited Highclere Castle! I’ll post more on that soon! ♥️

📸We didn’t have Miabelle yet when we visited Highclere. We got her Christmas Eve 2020. Swipe to see her confused but pretty little face right when we brought her home.🐾

📸 And the last pic is us out for family walk in Old Town. The beautiful spot we call home.♥️

On our first Valentines Day as a couple, we decide On our first Valentines Day as a couple, we decided to keep it low key. After all, there can be lots of pressure around Valentine’s Day! And no new couple needs that!

A movie at my home was the plan. At my Torpedo Factory townhouse (we still had both our townhouses then). Cheese and charcuterie. A fire in the fireplace. Ya know.

I went to Harris Teeter to buy some pate, brie, and the likes.

As I was standing in line. I saw beautiful red roses in a basket in the line next to me. And I wondered if Miles was going to give me flowers? He told me early on that he really doesn’t give flowers. So I was prepared for that.

As I was having my thoughts. I looked up and there he was. My then boyfriend, Miles. And those red roses that I thought were so beautiful were for me! 🌹

I seem to remember too that he was bummed to get caught. But he did think it was rather convenient to send the flowers along with me in my car since I was going straight there with the other stuff. 😂

I’m so grateful for the flowers. And for the fact that I thought to take a pic. I love remembering this every year! 📸

Love you so much @milesdejiles thanks for all the flowers and love you’ve given me! 🥰
A Valentine’s poem from the Furry Princess . . . A Valentine’s poem from the Furry Princess . . .
Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I use Ten days until Valentine’s Day. And oh how I used to dread that day before Miles.

I just want to remind everyone. I didn’t meet Miles until I was 34ish and Miles was 52ish.

If you have someone you really love to celebrate with: fabulous. If not: celebrate you! And your fur baby, if you have one!

Don’t give your power away to a day. Hold true to the fact that you are special, divine, and worthy of a magical miraculous love.

Wait for the one. I promise. It’s with it.

😘

One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, One year ago. On our two week long, cross country, drive to Las Vegas. We were so ready to just get there. To the bungalow in Summerlin. To settle in. Not unpack and pack up the car again.

We were gonna push through. Almost there. One more ice tea from McDonalds. I thought.

I made the wrong turn to get the ice tea. And we ended up in Sedona.

It is a really beautiful spot. A picture perfect detour.

And the next day. Before leaving for our final stretch through the desert to Las Vegas, I got my ice tea at the only place where McDonalds Golden Arches are actually turquoise.
